Staff Writer NORTHFIELD – As the last of the summer projects wind down and the doors at the Northfield Community School get ready to open for another school year, Northfield School District Superintendent Janice Fipp said there are a lot of things to be excited about. “We are really thrilled to have added 10 new smart boards to our classrooms,” Fipp said. Fipp said the teachers are being trained to be ready to put them into use immediately and planning lessons that incorporate the high-tech teaching tool. The superintendent explained that it takes preparation for a teacher to use the smart board as a component of the lesson. Teachers must have appropriate websites ready to access that address questions that students might have related to the lesson or a video that will bring the lesson to life. The smart boards allow students and teachers to easily transition between subjects, comparing charts and graphs one minute, then with a click, the numbers of soldiers in the Civil War the next or a battle scene from Gettysburg, giving students a real image of the magnitude of forces from the North and the South. “It helps bring lessons to life,” said Fipp. “Our students are very tuned into technology in their homes. This gives our classrooms the same kind of access to information our students are accustomed to outside of school,” said the superintendent. “The teacher can point and click and to support a history lesson; the smart boards give the teacher the opportunity to go to a museum. It makes the lesson more meaningful than just the teacher lecturing.” But as much as the smart boards are terrific teaching tools, the superintendent said that does not replace the mission of the school, which is to improve basic skills of every student. Joseph Campisi, the elementary principal, said reading every day is key to the students’ success. “We can never lose sight of the fact that students need 45 to 90 minutes of reading at their level every day,” said Campisi. He explained that his teachers will See TECH on Page 11
