Bond ordinance appropriates \$1.5 million for city improvements
Deputy mayor’s comments spark contention between public and council
By
MICHAEL FEELY
Staff Writer City Council addressed routine ordinances and resolutions on Wednesday evening before the public comments section of the meeting focused on previously discussed issues. Ordinance 13 of 2010 dealt with a change in the traffic pattern at East Evans Boulevard and 11th Street North. The intersection will become a four-way stop for the next six months and then will be reviewed. The city wants to change the current two-way stop and allow traffic to proceed down Evans Boulevard. This change, when complete, will make the traffic stops consistent with the rest of the area. The city also authorized a bond ordinance appropriating \$1.5 million for various improvements, including municipal roadway improvements to portions of Hutchinson Place, Heald Circle, Hudson Drive, Waterview Drive, Roosevelt Boulevard and parts of Bayshore Avenue. It will also continue the installation of ADA-compliant accessible ramps on Ocean Avenue. The storm sewer system on Hutchinson Place, East Shore Drive and Fownes Avenue will be improved. The computer and security systems at the Brigantine municipal complex will be upgraded. There will also be improvement at the city’s recreation fields and public grounds as well as the purchase of a new street sweeper and four-wheel-drive vehicle. Resolution 2010-15 was authorized that will allow the city to develop a grant application for municipal aid from the Department of Transportation. These funds, if approved, will allow for the reconstruction of Roosevelt Boulevard. This is a similar grant to the one that allowed for the reconstruction of Lafayette Boulevard. The city also authorized Resolution 2010-119 to extend its contract with ORDINANCE continued on Page 27

Mandes family offers Magic Lemonade Stand grants
submitted by Julie Mandes
Joseph and Michael Mandes have run their Alex’s Lemonade Stand regularly for six summers in Brigantine, having received two awards for being one of the top 100 stands in the nation. To continue the effort and to try to get others involved in supporting the cause of raising funds for pediatric cancer research, the Mandes family has created Magic Lemonade Stand grants. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation started with the idea of young Alex Scott who was herself battling cancer. She wanted to do something to help her friends who had cancer by giving the money raised from her lemonade stand to her doctors. The idea has spread like wildfire and small stands together have raised millions to fund pediatric cancer research. The idea of a little girl, who has since lost her battle with cancer, has spread into a nationwide phenomenon. Kids come together to help. Every little bit raised adds up to a lot of help for kids with cancer. This is what is behind the Mandes family’s idea of giving away 10 Magic Lemonade Stand grants to kids who wish to help them reach their goal of raising \$25,000 for the cause. The Mandes were just about \$1,000 away from reaching their goal when they had the idea of giving away 10 jumbo canisters of Country Time lemonade mix to the first 10 kids who contact them. Only one grant has been given away so far. “It is up to the kids to be the heroes to make reaching our goal happen!” said 15-year-old twins Joseph and Michael Mandes. “We hope to see some kids stand up and be active in volunteer work. It is fun to help others and easy when you work with friends. This is where our Magic Lemonade grants come in!” Alex’s Lemonade Stand No. 5115 is looking to grant nine more kids each with the lemonade mix if they call with parent’s permission to pledge to attempt to raise \$100 between now and the end of this summer, by running their own Alex’s Lemonade Stand or two. In doing this, they will be a part of the GRANTS continued on Page 27
