Inspiration flows both ways in teacher of the year’s classes
Rowan University. He did not immediately get into teaching, he said, instead trying his hand in human resources. “My father was an English teacher, so I really didn’t ever imagine that I would become one, too. When I was in high school I probably would have told you that was one of the last things I would do,” Costal said. After teaching a public speaking course at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey for a short time, he decided he like teaching better and decided to leave corporate America for the classroom. “I realized that was my favorite part of the day,” he said. Costal said he felt right at home the moment he walked through the doors at Oakcrest. He doesn’t have a favorite lesson or a favorite part of the day; he just really enjoys inspiring students – as well as being inspired by them. “I love being in the classroom,” he said. “I can name literally hundreds of students that have impacted me over my years at Oakcrest,” Costal said. “People would be amazed at the unbelievable thoughts and ideas that young people have.” One of the things he likes most about teaching English is the opportunity he has to allow students to analyze their place in the world. “Teaching English puts me in a position to really allow students to explore who they are,” he said. But, he said, he also truly enjoys teaching Film Institute because of the collaboration of English, history and media. “That’s a really, really interesting teaching opportunity for me,” Coastal said. “We basically work cooperatively to create a really innovative environment.” Being innovative is easy at Oakcrest, thanks to the support of the administration and fellow faculty members, he said. “The administration here at Oakcrest are so supportive,” Costal said, providing a “really creative an environment in which doing good work for our students is easy.” In addition to his work in the classroom, Costal is the advisor for Student Council. He also coached the mock trial team. Previously, he was a class advisor. “Getting this honor is very validating and also very humbling. I just want to continue to do the work that I’ve done to get me to this point,” he said. To comment on this story email Claire.lowe @catamaranmedia.com.
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP –
Oakcrest High School English teacher Joe Costal has been selected this year’s teacher of the year by a special district committee. Costal is a seventh-year sophomore English teacher who also teaches a senior course called Film Institute. He said he found out about the honor Monday, Feb. 22. “I was really, really happy. I was thrilled,” Costal said. “I think that I work with a lot of really dedicated, really creative people here at Oakcrest, so to be involved in a conversation to be among the best of them is really flattering.” Costal, who lives in Marmora with his wife, Shannon, and two “amazing” sons Charlie, 4, and Fin, 2, received his teaching certificate from
